A Winter Road Trip to New Hampshire

Winter road trips are a new thing for us this year (2021). Usually we don’t go north in winter as we were not confident enough to drive in snowy conditions. After taking a winter trip to Lake Placid, we planned another road trip to Lincoln, NH for a weekend. The road was pretty smooth and fortunately there was no heavy snow. The main reason for the road trip to New Hampshire was to visit the popular Ice Castle – the place was on our list for some time now.

We had an amazing time exploring the place in winters. Let us take you through the places we enjoyed –

Ice Castle

Ice Castle in North Woodstock was the main motivation of our road trip to new Hampshire. If you have not heard about it earlier – the place is designed and created by ice artists with many icicles hand placed to create magical winter wonderland. The place opens in January & February (peak winters) and slots fill up very fast. There are four locations where you can find Ice Castles in North America. For more details, check here.

Franconia Notch

Franconia Notch State park is a 15 mintues drive from Linclon or North Woodstock. It is a gorgeous place to enjoy the frozen world. You can also plan a short hikes in the area.

Outdoor Activities

Skiing, Tubing , Snowmobiling, Hiking and Dog sledding are some of the popular outdoor activities in winters in the area other than driving the scenic roads.

Pancakes

If you are in Linclon, NH – don’t miss Polly’s Pancake. I swear it was one of the best pancake we ever had. Our favorite was Ginger Bread with walnuts, Oatmeal with coconut and original with chocolate chips. Visit early in the day to avoid crowd and queue.

Scenic Drives

We drove through Kancamagus highway (route 112) & Franconia Notch state park and stopped at view points – The winter is as beautiful as autumn – Only thing is most of the viewpoints are covered in snow.

Viewpoints

We stopped at a lot of places during the drive – our most favorite point was – Rocky Gorge in Conway, NH – Short hike along the frozen Swift river.

Hot Chocolate

Before this season ends, try to have all kind of Hot Chocolates in all the places possible. This time we had Hot Chocolate over a table made of Ice (how cool!).

We stayed for a night in Lincoln, NH. The place was 10 mins drive from the Ice Castle. Traveling in winter is fun, if you are prepared well. So, carry all kinds of warm layers with you.

With that said, hope this blog inspires you to take trips in winters and have fun. Pin it or Bookmark this page for future travel.
